Police have arrested former social welfare minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed in Rangpur on charges related to violence during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali confirmed that Nuruzzaman was taken into custody from a residence on Central Road at approximately 9:15pm on Thursday (30 January)
Nuruzzaman, a former MP for Lalmonirhat-2, was appointed state minister for social welfare on 19 June 2016.
Following his victory in the 11th parliamentary election, he was elevated to minister and served in the role until 11 January 2024.
According to Commissioner Majid, police acted on a tip-off before raiding the house and arresting the former minister.
He faces multiple charges, including assault, attempted murder, and murder, stemming from his alleged involvement in violence during the student-led protests in Rangpur.
Nuruzzaman, his son, and 126 others have been named in a murder case over the killing of Mahamudul Hasan Munna during the protests.
Munna’s father, Abdul Majid, filed the case with the Rangpur Metropolitan Magistrate Kotwali Amli Court on 29 August 2024.
In connection with the same case, police arrested Al-Amin Hossain, a leader of the now-banned Chhatra League—the student wing of the Awami League—in the Station area’s Babupara on 28 January.
He was reportedly found in possession of weapons at the time of his arrest.
Earlier, on 27 October, detectives detained Nuruzzaman’s younger brother, Shamsuzzaman Ahmed Bhuttu, in Kaliganj Bazar, Lalmonirhat.
The case is part of a broader investigation into violent incidents that occurred during the student movement, which saw widespread unrest and allegations of political suppression.
