Dhaka had been experiencing a temperature rise since mid-January. Yet, as the month progresses towards its conclusion, the cold is returning with a noticeable increase in chill.

From early on Thursday (23 January) morning, a blanket of fog has enveloped the city's skies, resulting in temperatures being notably colder compared to the previous days.

Bangladesh  Meteorological Department has forecast that while the cold has increased towards the end of the month, it will likely lessen within two to three days.

However, a fresh cold wave is expected to arrive by 27 January, potentially affecting all districts, although its intensity may vary.

In a 72-hour forecast issued on 23 January, the department indicated that temperatures in the southern regions of the country may rise slightly at night and during the day, while other areas are expected to see little change.

It further noted that the weather across the nation is likely to remain dry, with occasional cloud cover.

From late night through to the morning, moderate to dense fog may form in the north-western regions, while light to moderate fog may persist in other areas, possibly lasting until midday.

In terms of synoptic conditions, the report attributed the changing weather patterns to the expansion of the subcontinental high-pressure system over West Bengal and adjoining areas.

The normal seasonal low-pressure area in the southern Bay of Bengal is currently positioned over the region, with an extended portion reaching the northern Bay of Bengal.

Weather is expected to remain dry with partial cloud cover across the country.

Light to moderate fog may form overnight and last until morning. Nighttime temperatures are predicted to rise by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures may experience a slight decrease.

According to the extended five-day forecast, early parts of the period may bring a further decrease in both night and daytime temperatures.
