The Detective Branch (DB) of Rangamati police has arrested one person with foreign-brand cigarettes worth an estimated Tk 2 crore on Friday (20 December).
Rangamati DB Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dows Mohammad said the contraband cigarettes were smuggled from India and were en route to Chattogram when intercepted.
Acting on a tip-off, officers stopped a truck loaded with gas cylinders in the Vedvedi area of Rangamati and found 160 cartons of cigarettes concealed beneath the cylinders. One individual, identified as Jewel, was caught red-handed during the operation.
"The cigarettes were being smuggled in an elaborate manner, using gas cylinders to hide the consignment," said the Officer-in-Charge.
Legal proceedings are ongoing, he added.
