There is no possibility of shortage of fertilizer during the coming boro season as the country has sufficient stock of all kind of fertilizers.
The country now has stock of 6.81 lakh metric tons of urea, 1.25 lakh metric tons of Triple super phosphate (TSP), 2.28 lakh metric tons of Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and 2.48 lakh metric tons of Muriate of Potash (MoP), officials said.
“As we have sufficient stock, we are not concerned about any crisis of fertilizer in the coming boro season,” said Ahmed Faisal Imam, additional secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The buffer stock godowns and the dealers under the Department Agricultural Extension (DAE) have enough fertilizer stock ahead of the boro cultivation, he said.
Total demand of urea and non-urea fertilizer for the robi season up to March has been fixed at 16,48701 metric tons, TSP 4,66,279 metric tons, DAP 9,68,777 metric tons and MoP 5,56,846 metric tons.
Deputy Director of DAE Aminul Islam said, “We have enough stock of all types of fertilizer at the buffer godowns run by BCIC and BADC.”
He said keeping in mind this year’s total and seasonal demand of fertilizer, the private and public sector importers including Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) and Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) are continuously importing the fertilizer.
Out of the total fertilizer demand, BCIC will produce 10 lakh metric tons of urea locally and the rest 15 lakh metric tons will be imported from a Chattogram based joint venture multinational company Karnafuli Fertiliser Company or KAFCO and abroad.
“We have already produced 5.5 lakh metric tons of urea locally and import process is continuing round the year”, said M Saiful Alam, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of BCIC adding BCIC will import one lakh metric ton of TSP and one lakh metric tons of DAP during this time.
According to the import plan, BADC will procure 4.50 lakh metric tons of TSP, 9 lakh metric tons of DAP and 7 lakh metric tons of MoP while the rest 2 lakh metric tons of TSP, 5 lakh metric tons of DAP and 2.50 lakh metric tons of MoP will be imported by the private sector.
Meanwhile, the government has set a target to produce 2.26 crore metric tons of boro rice on 50.70 lakh hectors of land during the season.
