Protesters demanding the conversion of Titumir College into a university vacated the busy Amtoli intersection in the capital’s Mohakhali area following strong public discontent.

On Thursday (24 October) at noon, students from Titumir College marched in protest to the Amtoli Flyover intersection in Mahakhali, where they staged a demonstration.

However, by 1:15pm, they left the area and returned to their campus after facing the frustration and anger of the general public.

The demonstration, which lasted approximately an hour and a half, caused severe traffic congestion on the roads leading from Mahakhali to Uttara, Farmgate, Gulshan, and Tejgaon.

Many commuters were seen engaging in verbal altercations with the protesting students.

Eventually, the students were compelled to abandon the protest site and clear the road.

During the initial phase of the roadblock, a bus window was shattered, and a motorcyclist was assaulted.

While some students became involved in these untoward incidents, others tried to prevent further escalation.

The protest began with a pre-announced rally that circled the college before the students took their positions at Amtoli.

Throughout the demonstration, they chanted slogans such as, "Awaken, Titumir is awake," "Education is not for sale," "Break the hegemony of Dhaka University," and "No to subjugation by Dhaka University," among others.
