United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reiterated its commitment to assisting Bangladesh in finding a sustainable resolution to the ongoing Rohingya crisis.

During a meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, UNHCR Filippo Grandi expressed his readiness to collaborate with Bangladesh on this pressing issue on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday (21 January).

Later that evening, a post detailing the discussion was published on the chief advisor's Facebook page.

In response to Professor Yunus' appeal for support, especially for a major global conference on the Rohingya situation later this year, Grandi affirmed, "We are prepared to assist you."

Professor Yunus noted that Grandi's involvement would add significant weight to their efforts.

Highlighting the additional burden imposed on Bangladesh by the arrival of approximately one lakh Rohingya refugees, Yunus called for renewed global attention to the crisis. "The situation is becoming increasingly complex. They are pushing more Rohingya towards Bangladesh," he remarked.

Grandi expressed his gratitude to the chief advisor for permitting the use of better materials for constructing shelters for the Rohingya. Previously, they were only allowed to build with bamboo and tarpaulins.

The meeting also touched upon the humanitarian situation in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, where the Arakan Army insurgents are engaged in conflict with Myanmar’s military forces.

Professor Yunus informed that he had appointed a high representative to coordinate efforts among all governments and international organisations concerning the Rohingya crisis.

The chief advisor arrived in Zurich at 10am local time on Tuesday to participate in the World Economic Forum.

He was welcomed by Bangladesh’s ambassador to Geneva, Md Arifur Rahman. The chief adviser is expected to return to Bangladesh on 25 January.
