A mild to moderate heatwave continues to sweep through three divisions and four districts in Bangladesh, but the weather is expected to cool in some regions starting on Sunday (30 March), according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
BMD reported that the Dhaka, Rajshahi, and Khulna divisions, along with the Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Barishal, and Patuakhali districts, are experiencing intense heat.
Meteorologist Shahnaz Sultana noted that while the heatwave was felt on Saturday, temperatures would ease somewhat across these regions during the day.
“The heatwave could be felt yesterday, and it’s still here today, but it will ease quite a lot in some places today. The possibility of rain is next to none. Overall, the weather will be quite pleasant during Eid,” Sultana said.
BMD clarified that temperatures between 36°C and 38°C are classified as a mild heatwave, while 38°C to 40°C constitutes a moderate heatwave.
A severe heatwave occurs when temperatures rise to 40°C to 42°C, and an extreme heatwave is classified when temperatures exceed 42°C.
The BMD’s regular bulletin indicated that the weather would remain dry with partly cloudy skies over the next 24 hours, starting at 9 AM on Sunday. It was also forecasted that daytime temperatures might drop, while nighttime temperatures could rise across the country.
Temperatures are expected to remain steady during the day but could increase by 1-2°C at night over the 24 hours from Monday, 9 AM, the BMD further noted.
Looking ahead to Tuesday, the BMD predicted mainly dry weather with occasional partly cloudy skies, with the possibility of temporary gusty winds and lightning in some areas of the Sylhet Division.
The BMD forecasted no significant changes in the weather over the following five days.
Jashore recorded the highest temperature in the country over the past 24 hours at 39.4°C, while Rajshahi recorded the lowest at 16.8°C.
