Court orders confiscation of Tk2.97 billion in illicit assets

A Dhaka court has sentenced SM Golam Kibria Shamim, a controversial government contractor, to five and a half years in prison for amassing wealth beyond known sources of income.

Judge Md Rabiul Alam of Dhaka's Fourth Special Judge's Court delivered the verdict on Thursday, also imposing a fine of Tk100,000.

Failure to pay will result in an additional three months in jail.

Additionally, the court ordered the confiscation of his movable and immovable assets—amounting to Tk 2.97 billion, deeming them illegally acquired.
