Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus has urged the global community to take decisive action against racial injustice, particularly highlighting the plight of the Rohingya people, who continue to suffer from racial discrimination and statelessness.
In a statement marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on Friday (21 March), he reiterated that while Bangladesh has generously sheltered over a million displaced Rohingyas since 2017, their repatriation to Myanmar remains the only viable solution to this humanitarian crisis.
Prof Yunus stressed that the international community must actively work towards securing the Rohingyas’ safe return to their homeland.
On this occasion, Bangladesh reaffirmed its firm commitment to fighting racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and intolerance in all its forms.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), a landmark treaty in the fight against racial injustice.
"As a state party to ICERD, Bangladesh upholds non-discrimination as a fundamental principle of governance and society," said Prof Yunus, reinforcing the country’s dedication to human rights and racial equality.
While Bangladesh continues to advocate for a global response to the Rohingya crisis, the challenge remains in securing a sustainable and dignified solution for one of the world’s most persecuted communities.
