The entire country, including the capital Dhaka, is grappling with an icy winter as the meteorological office forecasts severe cold accompanied by potential rainfall.

The nation may experience intermittent drizzle amidst dense fog, said the Bangladesh Meteorological Department in its latest weather update on Friday (3 January).

The weather bulletin further stated that despite a partially cloudy sky, the weather across the country is likely to remain dry.

Moderate to dense fog is expected to blanket the nation from midnight to noon, potentially disrupting air travel, inland waterways, and road communications.

The bulletin highlighted that nighttime temperatures across the country might see a slight increase, while daytime temperatures are anticipated to rise by 1°C to 3°C.

However, the persistent dense fog could maintain a lingering chill during daylight hours.

Meteorologist Omar Faruq noted that Dhaka and its surrounding areas are currently bearing the brunt of the cold.

"Thursday marked the coldest day across the nation, with Dhaka recording the lowest temperatures, followed closely by Aricha," he remarked.

Explaining the reason behind the intensified cold sensation, he said, "The minimum temperature in Dhaka was recorded at 13.8°C, while the maximum was 16°C—a difference of merely 2.2°C. This narrow range between the highest and lowest temperatures heightens the perception of cold. A similar pattern was observed in Aricha, with a temperature gap of 2.3°C."

The meteorological office also warned of an escalation in cold intensity over the coming days.

Light drizzle is likely in the northern regions within the next five days, which could bring further drops in temperature.
