At least 20 people were injured in an alleged attack on the motorcade of the March for Unity of the Students Against Discrimination in Mollahat, Bagerhat, on Tuesday (December 31). The incident took place around 11:30am near Madrasa Ghat in Mollahat Upazila.
According to reports, the altercation began when one of the 25 buses carrying students from Khulna to Dhaka was involved in a dispute over giving way to another vehicle. The disagreement escalated when passengers of the other vehicle and local bus station workers allegedly pulled some students off the bus and assaulted them.
The situation quickly spiraled into a violent confrontation, with both groups engaging in counterattacks, paralysing traffic on the Khulna-Mawa highway for nearly two hours.
Mollahat police station officer-in-charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam said, the situation became normal, and the students had resumed their journey. "Traffic on the highway became normalize around 1:15pm," he added.
Zahurul Tanvir, a regional coordinator for the Students Against Discrimination, alleged that the attack was carried out on their peaceful convoy en route to Dhaka. "Many students were injured during the attack," he said, claiming that the assault was orchestrated by local Awami League members.
