Postgraduate private trainee doctors staged a demonstration at Shahbagh intersection on Sunday (29 December) morning, demanding a raise in their monthly stipend to Tk50,000.

The protest began around 11:30am, according to Khalid Monsur, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station.

The blockade brought traffic to a standstill, causing significant inconvenience to commuters.

Eyewitnesses reported that several hundred doctors, united under the banner of the Doctors' Movement for Justice, gathered at the intersection, chanting slogans to reinforce their demands.

This is not the first instance of such a protest.

On 22 December, the same group blocked Shahbagh intersection with similar demands. In response to the earlier demonstration, the Finance Division issued a circular on Monday increasing the stipend for postgraduate private trainee doctors from Tk25,000 to Tk30,000.

However, this increment has been dismissed by the protesters, who continue to demand a further raise to Tk50,000.

The situation at Shahbagh remains tense as the doctors persist with their protest, insisting on the fulfilment of their demands.
