Myanmar's junta chief Min Aung Hlaing is seeking a bilateral meeting with Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus during the upcoming BIMSTEC leaders' summit in Thailand, reports Reuters.
The junta chief is set to attend the 3-4 April summit in Bangkok, marking a rare visit to a Southeast Asian country since seizing power in a 2021 coup that plunged Myanmar into civil war. Myanmar's delegation is reportedly pursuing high-level meetings with leaders and top officials, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Professor Yunus.
"They have been reaching out asking for meetings," one of the sources told Reuters, referring to Myanmar officials.
Thailand's foreign ministry confirmed that leaders of all BIMSTEC member states had affirmed their participation in the summit, which includes nations such as Thailand, Myanmar, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.
