An award-winning political cartoonist for The Washington Post has tendered her resignation after a cartoon depicting the newspaper's billionaire owner, Jeff Bezos, grovelling before Donald Trump was rejected.
Ann Telnaes, who has garnered significant acclaim for her incisive political commentary, announced her departure via Substack on Friday, reports the AFP.
She revealed that it was the first instance in which one of her cartoons was suppressed due to its subject matter.
The contentious cartoon, shared in her post, portrays Amazon founder and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos alongside Facebook and Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, among other media and technology moguls, kneeling with bags of money before a colossal figure of Trump.
The illustration also includes a prostrated Mickey Mouse, symbolising The Disney Company, which owns ABC News.
This detail comes in the wake of ABC News recently reaching a $15 million settlement with Trump following his defamation lawsuit related to coverage of his sexual abuse trial in New York.
Telnaes' resignation underscores the tension between editorial freedom and corporate interests within major media outlets.
