The National Citizen Party (NCP) has called for fundamental reforms to the state structure to address the aspirations of the July mass uprising and prevent fascism and autocratic tendencies in future governments.
Speaking at a dialogue with the National Consensus Commission on Saturday, NCP Convener Nahid Islam emphasized the need for transformative changes to ensure a democratic and accountable governance system. "By reform, we mean fundamental reform and changes that bring a radical and qualitative transformation in the state structure," he said.
The dialogue, held at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Complex, began at 10:30 am and was chaired by Prof Ali Riaz, Vice Chairman of the National Consensus Commission. An eight-member NCP delegation, led by Nahid Islam, participated in the discussions.
Nahid Islam criticized past governments for politicizing state institutions, including the Constitution, which he argued had sown the seeds of a centralized, one-person-centric power structure. "If the state structure remains unchanged, there will always be a tendency for those in power to become fascist and autocratic," he warned.
The dialogue is part of the Consensus Commission’s ongoing efforts to engage political parties in building a national consensus for state reform initiatives launched by the interim government.
