Australian Home Minister Tony Burke informed Bangladesh’s Home Adviser, Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, via telephone on Thursday (20 March) that Australia will now process visas for Bangladeshi citizens directly from its High Commission in Dhaka.
The home adviser relayed this update to the council of advisers the same day, confirming that the decision takes effect immediately.
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus had formally requested this change during Australian Home Minister Burke’s visit to Bangladesh in October last year.
Until now, visas for Bangladeshi nationals were processed through Australia’s High Commission in New Delhi.
