On 30 April 711, Moorish forces led by Tariq ibn-Ziyad landed at Gibraltar, initiating the Islamic conquest of the Iberian Peninsula.
The landing marked the beginning of centuries of Muslim rule in parts of modern-day Spain and Portugal, a period later known as Al-Andalus.
