Former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University AAMS Arefin Siddique has passed away.
He breathed his last at 10:45pm on Thursday (13 March) while undergoing treatment at the Neurosurgery Department of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital, said Arefin Siddique's brother Saifullah Siddique.
The former DU vice chancellor was put on life support on 6 March after collapsing suddenly at the Dhaka Club and sustaining a head injury.
Professor Arefin Siddique's namaz-e-janaza will be held at Shahi Eidgah, next to Abahani Field on Sat Masjid Road, Dhanmondi after Jummah prayers on Friday (14 march).
Before janaza, his body will be kept at his Dhanmondi residence.
He will be laid to rest beside his parents' grave at Azimpur Graveyard in the capital.
Arefin Siddique served as the 27th vice-chancellor of the Dhaka University during 2009–2017.
On 15 July 2020, he was appointed as the chairman of the board of directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).
He was also president of the board of trustees of Bangladesh National Museum.
He joined the University of Dhaka in 1980 and his teaching career spans about four decades.
Arefin Siddique served as a visiting fellow at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, USA.
He was decorated with the "Order of the Civil Merit" by his excellency the King of Spain for his extraordinary contribution to the expansion of education, women empowerment, and poverty reduction.
He was the longest serving vice-chancellor of the University of Dhaka till date.
