Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives (LGRD) Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has stated that at least city corporation and municipality elections should be held soon to alleviate citizens' suffering.
Asif Mahmud, who is also the adviser to the Youth and Sports Ministry, made the remarks while speaking at a program in Dhaka on National Local Government Day 2025 on Tuesday.
He stated, “All institutions under the LGRD department, with the cooperation of law enforcement agencies and citizens, must take proper measures to address the chaotic situation that has arisen.”
Highlighting the challenges in improving law and order, he added, “A coordinated effort is necessary to tackle these challenges. Holding elections in city corporations and municipalities quickly will help reduce the burden on citizens.”
Asif also issued a stern warning against corruption and called for comprehensive reforms, not just institutionally but also in mindset and behavior.
“Alongside institutional reforms, it is crucial to bring about changes in our thinking and behaviour,” he remarked, adding that the people of Bangladesh expect positive transformations in all aspects of governance following the July mass uprising.
The adviser expressed concern over some political leaders making controversial statements, urging them to adopt a more refined approach to their public discourse. “Political leaders should ensure their remarks are more polished and constructive,” he concluded.
