Kolkata and parts of Odisha experienced seismic tremors on Tuesday morning following a 5.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the Bay of Bengal, with its effects reaching as far as Dhaka.

According to reports from the seismic monitoring website Volcano Discovery and news outlet Live Mint, the earthquake occurred at 6:10am local time.

The tremor, which lasted only a few seconds, had its epicentre in the Bay of Bengal at a depth of 91 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface.

India’s National Centre for Seismology confirmed the earthquake, noting that the epicentre was approximately 220 kilometres from Odisha’s Paradip.

The tremors were strongly felt in Kolkata, Howrah, West Midnapore, and several neighbouring districts.

Residents in these areas reported experiencing mild to moderate shaking, though no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage emerged.

The tremors also extended beyond Indian borders, with Dhaka residents noting light tremors in parts of the city.

Seismologists continue to monitor the situation, but experts have indicated that no aftershocks are expected.
