The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi solemnly observed International Mother Language Day on Friday (21 February), hosting a series of events to pay tribute to the language martyrs and reflect on the day’s significance.

The commemoration began with acting high commissioner Md Nurul Islam hoisting the national flag at the High Commission premises, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Shaheed Minar, honouring those who sacrificed their lives for linguistic rights, said a press release.

As part of the morning programme, two documentaries were screened, and messages from Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain were read out, underscoring the profound importance of linguistic heritage.

The observance concluded in the evening with a cultural programme attended by officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs and diplomats from various foreign missions.

Addressing the gathering, the acting high commissioner reflected on the sacrifices of the language martyrs, remarking that their struggle laid the foundation for Bangladesh’s independence in 1971.

“Let us all recognise the power of language in shaping our identity,” he said.

He also emphasised the significance of celebrating the day in India, a country where Bengali is spoken by over 115 million people, reinforcing the deep cultural ties between the two nations.
