The Bangladesh Bank has decided to freeze all lockers held by its former and current officials, effectively barring access to any assets stored within them, sources within the central bank confirmed on Tuesday (4 February).
According to insiders, officials are now prohibited from depositing or withdrawing any assets from these designated lockers.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) suspects that a substantial volume of undeclared wealth, including cash and valuables, has been illicitly stashed in these secure compartments.
In a bid to prevent any attempt to remove assets from the lockers, the ACC’s Director Kazi Sayemuzzaman sent a formal request to the central bank’s governor on Sunday (2 February), urging immediate action to freeze them.
The move follows a recent ACC operation that led to the discovery of a significant cache of foreign currency and gold ornaments inside the personal locker of a former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank.
