Tulip Siddiq has resigned as UK's treasury minister following repeated questions about her financial connections to the ousted Bangladeshi government, led by her aunt Sheikh Hasina.

The Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate previously served as the city and anti-corruption minister, and was not found to have breached any rules by Laurie Magnus, UK PM Kier Starmer's adviser on ministerial standards, reports The Guardian.

However, Magnus, in his advice to Labour leader Keir Starmer, suggested that Tulip Siddiq could have been more mindful of the reputational risks arising from her family’s ties to Bangladesh and recommended that the UK prime minister consider her future responsibilities.

Tulip Siddiq resigned on Tuesday (14 January), stating that she had fully declared all her financial interests and relationships.

However, she acknowledged that the situation had become a distraction for the government.

Earlier this month, Tulip had referred herself to Starmer’s adviser on ministerial standards after it was revealed she had lived in multiple properties linked to individuals associated with her aunt, Sheikh Hasina, the former Bangladeshi leader who was ousted down last year following a popular uprising.

Tulip Siddiq faced scrutiny over her residency in several properties, including a two-bedroom flat near King’s Cross in central London and a separate home in Hampstead.
