Several hundred workers from a garment factory named Bashundhara Garments blocked a road in Savar on Monday (30 December) demanding the payment of overdue wages.

The workers took their position on the Singair-Hemayetpur regional road in Hemayetpur, Savar, from the morning.

As of 11:30am, when this report was filed, the protesting workers continued to block the road, chanting various slogans to press for their demands.

Superintendent of Police Mominul Islam Bhuiyan of Ashulia Industrial Police-1 said the workers were protesting to claim their arrears.

"We are trying to contact the factory management, but as no representatives are currently available, resolving the workers' concerns remains difficult," he added.

The workers reported that last month’s wages had not yet been paid by the factory management.

Previous demonstrations and roadblocks over the same issue were called off when assurances of resolution were given by the army.

However, with no payment forthcoming, the workers resumed their protest, issuing warnings of stricter actions if their dues were not settled immediately.
