Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today warned that strict measures would be taken to protect the country's forests and environment.
"No matter how powerful the forest occupants are, action will be taken against them," she told a discussion on forest and environmental conservation at the conference room of Gazipur Deputy Commissioner's office.
Speaking as the chief guest, Rizwana said after August 5, 16 acres out of 90 acres of occupied forest has already been recovered in Gazipur.
She emphasised that the government knows how to counter resistance from forest land grabbers.
She announced plans to recover all occupied forest lands within the next three months and instructed the deputy commissioners (DCs) to expedite the process of demarcating forest boundaries.
The adviser further mentioned that strict actions would also be taken to prevent deforestation and pollution caused by industries.
She instructed the Department of Environment to thoroughly review all aspects before issuing permits and to include public opinion during the renewal process.
The meeting was presided over by Gazipur DC Nafisa Arefin. The Superintendent of Gazipur Police, the Commander of the Army Security Unit, the Commander of 63 BGB, the Secretary of Gazipur City Corporation, officials from the Forest Department and the Department of Environment, government and non-government officials, local representatives, and environmental activists attended the meeting.
The participants discussed local environmental issues, illegal forest occupation, and pollution.
The adviser said prompt actions would be taken to resolve those problems.
She urged government and private organisations as well as citizens to play active roles in protecting environment.
