The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to investigate allegations of corruption amounting to Tk80,000 crore across eight mega projects, including the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
The inquiry will focus on former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her niece Tulip Siddiq, and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
The decision to approve separate investigations into two specific allegations—one involving Tk59,000 crore and the other Tk21,000 crore—was taken at the commission’s regular meeting on Tuesday (17 December).
Earlier, the High Court had issued a rule questioning the ACC’s inaction regarding allegations of corruption amounting to Tk60,000 crore involving Sheikh Hasina and her family members.
The rule was issued by the High Court bench of Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Mubina Asaf on Sunday.
Barrister Shahedul Azam Tamal represented the petitioner during the court proceedings.
On 3 September, Bobby Hajjaj, chairman of the Nationalist Democratic Movement (NDM), filed a writ petition seeking directives for an investigation into the alleged corruption.
The writ specifically challenged the legality of the ACC’s inaction regarding corruption allegations at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, implicating Sheikh Hasina and her family members.
The ACC chairman and other relevant officials were named as respondents in the petition.
