Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has acknowledged the prevalence of irregularities across the country but noted that such issues are more pronounced in the Hill Tracts.
He underscored the importance of eliminating disparities between the Hill Tracts and the plains, emphasising the need for equitable development.
Speaking virtually from Jamuna on Wednesday (11 December) during a discussion event marking International Mountain Day, held at the Hill Tracts Complex in Bailey Road, Dhaka, Dr Yunus remarked, "The forests and natural resources of the Hill Tracts are unparalleled in Bangladesh. This region has the potential to be the most developed part of the country; however, the reality is quite the opposite. This is unacceptable."
"We must focus on reducing irregularities, particularly by prioritising advancements in technology and education. Efforts are already underway in this direction."
Dr Yunus further announced plans for next month’s "Festival of Youth," expressing his hopes for inclusive participation.
"Let this festival belong to everyone, and let us see the Hill Tracts districts excelling in this celebration. For the first time, this event will be held with such enthusiasm and energy generated by the youth themselves. The young people of the Hill Tracts are no less capable than their peers from other regions, and this is their opportunity to prove it."
He also assured his commitment to addressing grievances, stating, "Should any difficulties arise, inform me, and I will endeavour to resolve them. We aim not only to transform our country but also to change the world through our work."
Dr Yunus’s remarks highlighted his vision for a more equitable and prosperous Bangladesh, with the Hill Tracts serving as a beacon of development and inclusion.
