India-Bangladesh diplomatic tensions are adversely impacting the economies of both nations, stated Towhid Hossain, the interim government's foreign affairs adviser.

Speaking about the recent changes in bilateral relations, he highlighted the economic repercussions, particularly following the developments of 5 August.

He emphasised the need for constructive dialogue to move the relationship forward.

"We hope to overcome this deadlock. Establishing communication is crucial in resolving the current impasse. Tomorrow, India’s Foreign Secretary is scheduled to visit, and I am optimistic about fruitful discussions," he said on Sunday (8 December), during a seminar titled "The SAARC - People of South Asia Crave For".

Expressing strong support for SAARC's revival, he added, "Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus holds a very positive stance on strengthening SAARC. We aspire to return to normal regional relations."

Acknowledging the interim nature of the current administration, he remarked, "While this government may be temporary, the nation's interests are permanent. I am confident there exists a positive attitude among the people regarding SAARC. It is the responsibility of political leadership to advance this sentiment. Initiating secretary-level discussions—absent for the past decade—should be our first step, eventually leading to a summit."

Touhid Hossain expressed hope in eradicating regional poverty through mutual cooperation, stating, "If we support each other, we can alleviate poverty in this region. While we have made some progress, there remains a distance to traverse. Achieving this goal requires collective efforts. We need to enhance SAARC's operational effectiveness."

The seminar was presided over by SAARC Journalist Forum (Bangladesh Chapter) President Nasir Al Mamun, with Rafiqul Islam Azad, the convenor of the Seminar Organising Committee, serving as the moderator.

Other speakers included strategic expert Brigadier General (Retd) Hasan Nasir and Dhaka Union of Journalists President Md Shahidul Islam.

The keynote paper was presented by Mustafa Kamal Majumdar, former editor of The New Nation.
