BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has issued a fervent appeal to the Indian government and its citizens, warning that employing hate as a strategy in domestic politics could create enduring tensions between India and Bangladesh.
In a statement released on Tuesday (3 December), Fakhrul expressed grave concerns regarding recent developments.
Fakhrul strongly condemned the attack on Bangladesh's Assistant High Commission premises in North Agartala, allegedly carried out by members of the organisation “Hindu Sangharsh Samiti.”
He described the incident as a premeditated act that violated international norms.
“The act of entering the premises of the Assistant High Commission, lowering the Bangladeshi national flag, setting it ablaze, and engaging in vandalism is a clear breach of the Geneva Conventions,” Fakhrul stated.
He emphasised that such actions jeopardise the mutual respect and cooperation between the two nations, urging Indian authorities to take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Additionally, Fakhrul expressed hope that Indian citizens would respect the democratic aspirations of the people of the newly emerging Bangladesh.
He further urged the Indian government to repatriate Bangladeshi leaders residing in India, who were associated with the authoritarian regime of the Awami League, so they may face due justice.
The BNP leader's statement underlines the importance of maintaining harmonious ties between India and Bangladesh by fostering respect, mutual understanding, and adherence to international protocols.
