SAARC Secretary General Ambassador Md. Golam Sarwar expressed gratitude to Bangladesh for its enduring support to SAARC and reaffirmed the need for member states to reinvigorate the regional cooperation platform.
During his meeting with Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus at Tejgaon, Ambassador Sarwar conveyed his appreciation for Bangladesh’s instrumental role in the organization’s foundation in 1985. He thanked the Chief Advisor for prioritizing SAARC and consistently advocating its significance for the region’s well-being. The Secretary General outlined the organization's current activities, including initiatives by its Regional Centres and Specialized Bodies, and discussed plans for the upcoming year.
Ambassador Sarwar highlighted the forthcoming 40th anniversary of SAARC’s establishment as an opportunity to rejuvenate the organization, urging sincere efforts from all member states to revitalize its operations.
Dr. Yunus emphasized the need for SAARC to strengthen regional ties by fostering exchanges among youths, journalists, entrepreneurs, and writers. He urged the organization to focus on critical areas such as climate change, sustainable development, and renewable energy, which align with the shared interests of all member states.
Later, Ambassador Sarwar met Md. Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Advisor of the Interim Government, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They discussed SAARC’s present challenges and potential pathways to enhance its impact. The Secretary General thanked Bangladesh for its unwavering support, while Hossain reflected on the high aspirations of SAARC’s founders and emphasized the importance of advancing the organization's original vision.
