BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has termed the recent attack on media offices 'unfortunate,' especially in the wake of the student-people uprising.
Speaking at a discussion organized by the Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) at a city hotel on Thursday, Fakhrul emphasized the importance of press freedom and democratic rights.
“We will make every effort to protect the freedom of the press and ensure voting rights, no matter the cost,” he said.
Fakhrul also cautioned against taking any provocative actions during this critical time. “A provocative stance now will harm the country. We must avoid anything that could jeopardize the opportunity to reestablish democracy,” he remarked.
Addressing the challenges faced by the media, Fakhrul expressed disappointment. “In a fascist-free Bangladesh, the media would be able to speak freely. Over the past 15 years, journalists have feared writing openly due to the risk of imprisonment. It is frustrating that I must advocate for press freedom at a time when the media is under attack,” he added.
Fakhrul accused a "vested quarter" of attempting to divide the nation and lead it into chaos. He called for unity to combat these efforts, warning, “If these actions are not stopped, the dreams of the students and people who sacrificed their lives will be in vain.”
