Efforts are underway to curb the spiralling commodity prices despite various supply crises, said Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin.
"Due to a supply crisis, commodity prices have surged uncontrollably. Efforts are underway to manage the prices through increased supply, while directives have been issued to strengthen the role of consumer rights bodies," he said at the inauguration event of Trading Corporation of Bangladesh's (TCB) mobile potato-selling operations in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka on Wednesday (20 November).
The commerce adviser noted that weaknesses in the supply chain management are contributing to the sustained high prices of essential goods.
"To counteract this, all necessary measures are being taken to enhance supply, including reductions in duties on certain items, which has already led to a marginal drop in prices. The directive to robustly empower consumer rights bodies has also been issued to address this issue effectively," he added.
Furthermore, he added that rice imports have already commenced.
Permission has been granted to import approximately 20 crore eggs, the adviser further said.
He also said extensive measures are being taken concerning edible oils, and coordinated efforts among all parties are underway, particularly in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan.
