In a recent initiative aimed at enhancing traffic management in Dhaka, 700 students are being recruited as auxiliary traffic police, announced Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan.

These students will each undertake a four-hour shift daily, focusing on traffic control in critical areas of the city.

At a press conference held at the Secretariat on Wednesday (30 October), he disclosed the plan as part of the preparations for National Youth Day on 1 November.

Asif Mahmud explained that the initiative aims to provide students with practical work opportunities across various sectors, cultivating the next generation of skilled individuals for Bangladesh's future.

Of the 1,000 young participants who completed a recent course on traffic awareness, 700 have been selected for this recruitment drive.

Initially, 400 students will join the programme, with the number expected to expand to 700 in phases. They will be stationed at major points in the capital, primarily during the morning and evening hours when traffic congestion peaks.

The adviser further mentioned that should any of these students wish to pursue permanent positions in traffic management post-graduation, their applications for regular employment will be considered.

Additionally, he announced that the Youth and Employment Ministry has undertaken a national programme to clear 64 canals, including Dhaka’s Rampura-Zirani canal.

In addressing broader employment issues, Adviser Asif Mahmud highlighted that the country currently has 26 lakh graduate unemployed individuals, contributing to a total unemployed population of 1 crore 18 lakh.

In response, the government aims to create employment for 5 lakh youth over the next two years, with plans to provide vocational training to 9 lakh young people.
