Bangladesh could significantly benefit from harnessing the vast potential of Nepal's hydroelectric power, remarked Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the BNP Standing Committee.
"By overcoming the tarnished history of the past 15 years in the power sector, we can either utilise regional power pooling or import it directly," he stated following a meeting with Ghanshyam Bhandari, Nepal's Ambassador to Bangladesh, at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan on Monday (28 October).
Following the meeting, Amir Khasru elaborated, "Bangladesh and Nepal have had longstanding relations characterised by various forms of cooperation. However, we have yet to fully capitalise on the existing potential. We agreed on the need to strengthen SAARC to fully harness economic opportunities."
The discussion also highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts to uphold democratic governance.
Amir Khasru asserted that Bangladesh's relationship with Nepal would advance by maintaining the rule of law, ensuring security, and fostering regional cooperation.
He further noted that the two nations explored joint initiatives aimed at improving the education system.
The hour-long meeting was attended by Lalita Silwal, deputy ambassador of Nepal to Bangladesh, along with BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Shama Obaid, a member of the BNP's International Affairs Committee.
