Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks in Bangkok on Friday (29 March), amid strained ties between the two neighbouring nations.
The meeting took place at the Shangri-La Hotel in the Thai capital, shortly after midday local time, following the conclusion of the sixth BIMSTEC summit.
This marks the first official dialogue between Yunus and Modi since the professor assumed office under the interim administration.
Dhaka-Delhi relations have faced turbulence since the mass student and public uprising on 5 August last year, which led to significant political upheaval in Bangladesh.
Against this backdrop, the Yunus-Modi meeting carries added diplomatic weight.
The two leaders had briefly met the previous evening during a gala dinner hosted in honour of the BIMSTEC leaders.
Organised by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the event saw Yunus and Modi seated side by side, exchanging pleasantries in a cordial atmosphere.
Professor Yunus arrived in Bangkok on Thursday morning to attend the BIMSTEC summit, during which Bangladesh is set to assume the chairmanship of the regional grouping.
