BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has cautioned the interim government against taking any steps that would allow “fugitive autocrats” to regain influence in state affairs and politics.

“I would like to draw the attention of the interim government and reiterate that no steps should be taken to allow the fugitive autocrats and their cohorts to be rehabilitated in the state and politics,” he said while addressing an iftar party virtually at the Ladies Club in Eskaton on Friday.

He argued that holding local elections first could create opportunities for the “rehabilitation of fugitive autocrats and their associates,” who, he claimed, are still active in the country.

Tarique also pointed out that around three crore young voters have been deprived of their voting rights during what he described as “Sheikh Hasina’s mafia rule” spanning one and a half decades.

“The national election must be held first to ensure the political empowerment of these young voters,” he stated. Tarique further noted that no reforms would be sustainable without the political empowerment of the people, urging all stakeholders to remain vigilant and united against fascism in any form.
