The National Citizen Party (NCP) has condemned Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus' statement that “the Interim Government does not plan to ban the Awami League,” and announced a nationwide protest demanding that the party be banned.
NCP Convenor Nahid Islam expressed disappointment over Professor Yunus’ remarks, calling them “unexpected” from someone in such a responsible position. “Despite the internationally recognized massacres orchestrated by the Awami League, there has been no visible trial procedure. The government must ban Awami League so that no one can participate in political activities before the party is tried,” Nahid said.
Professor Yunus stated in an interview yesterday that the Interim Government does not intend to ban the Awami League, but members of its leadership accused of crimes—including murder and crimes against humanity—would face trial in Bangladeshi courts.
NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hussain announced countrywide protests to demand a government executive order banning the Awami League and its affiliated wings, effectively barring them from politics.
Nahid Islam said, “Awami League is not a democratic political organization. It was ousted not through an election but by a mass uprising. It is a fascist party.”
He urged all anti-fascist political parties and communities to unite in opposition to the Awami League’s political activities.
