BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said there is an unhealthy competition to hold onto power in the political area.
"Since Hasina fled, we have been unable to restore trust amongst ourselves. We cannot maintain a united front. What an unfortunate situation we find ourselves in now—it is far from healthy. An unhealthy competition has begun in the struggle to retain power. Stability must be restored if we are to remain in power," he said during a book launch event at the BNP Chairperson's office in Gulshan on Thursday (9 January).
In his address as the chief guest, he expressed concern over the lack of trust and unity within the party since the departure of Hasina.
He further highlighted the BNP's pioneering role in political reforms, stating, "We were the first to initiate reforms. Shaheed Ziaur Rahman was the first to reform the one-party system, steering it towards multi-party democracy. He granted press freedom, transitioning from just four newspapers in operation to opening up the media landscape. He revolutionised the economy, moving away from a flawed socialist model to a liberal economy."
Fakhrul emphasised that nationalism is inherently linked to reform, referencing the 19-point programme as the most significant reform initiative.
He criticised intellectuals for neglecting these achievements, stating, "Our intellectuals who speak loudly often ignore these facts. Many have yet to connect with the populace. I urge everyone to consider these aspects."
The event was attended by journalist Shafik Rehman, BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Ismail Jamiullah, Kisan Dal General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul, BNP acting chairman’s Adviser Mahdi Amin and others.
