The High Court has acquitted BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and all others accused in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

Previously, Begum Khaleda Zia had been sentenced to seven years in prison by a lower court.

In a landmark decision on Wednesday (27 November), a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahman granted her appeal, setting aside the earlier conviction.

The corruption case dates back to 8 August 2010, when it was filed at Tejgaon Police Station.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) had alleged that an amount of Tk3 crore 15 lakh 43 thousand was unlawfully transacted in the name of the Zia Charitable Trust.

This verdict marks a significant development in the legal battles faced by the BNP leader, offering her a much-needed reprieve amidst a slew of cases.
