Former police superintendent Babul Akter has been granted bail in the case concerning the murder of his wife, Mahamuda Khanam Mitu.

The decision was delivered on Wednesday (27 November), by a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Ataur Rahman and Justice Ali Reza.

Earlier, on 14 August, Babul Akter had filed a bail application in the court of Chittagong’s Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Md Jashim Uddin. However, the judge rejected the plea on 18 August.

The tragic incident occurred on 5 June 2016, around 7:15am, when Mitu was on her way to drop off her son at a school bus stop near GEC intersection in Chattogram.

She was approached by three assailants on a motorbike who surrounded her and shot her dead.

Following the murder, Babul Akter himself lodged a case with the Panchlaish Police Station.

On 12 May of this year, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted its final report in the case to the court.

On the same day, Mitu’s father, Mosharraf Hossain, filed a fresh case with Panchlaish Police Station accusing Babul Akter and seven others of her murder.

Babul Akter has been in custody since 17 May in connection with this case.
