In light of the recent student and public revolution, which led to the resignation and exile of the former prime minister, dissolution of parliament, and the subsequent establishment of the current interim government, President Mohammed Shahabuddin has issued a clear statement regarding the constitutional legitimacy of these events.

In a press release issued on Monday night (21 October), the President’s Press Wing addressed public confusion sparked by media reports quoting him on the former prime minister's resignation.

The president clarified that all concerns raised by the public about the resignation, exile, and the legitimacy of the interim government are reflected in Special Reference No. 01/2024, decided by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on 8 August 2024.

The statement further emphasized that, in accordance with Article 106 of the Constitution, the President sought the Supreme Court’s opinion on 8 August 2024, which resulted in the Appellate Division delivering its ruling on the matter.

President Mohammed Shahbuddin urged all parties to refrain from reigniting debate over the resolved issue or destabilising and embarrassing the interim government by creating unnecessary controversies.
