In April 1250, the Seventh Crusade, led by Louis IX of France, met a disastrous end in Egypt when Crusader forces were decisively defeated at the Battle of Fariskur by the Ayyubid Sultanate.
Louis IX was captured along with many of his knights, bringing the campaign to a humiliating conclusion.
His release was later secured through a hefty ransom and the return of the captured Egyptian city of Damietta, marking a major setback for European efforts in the Crusades.
