Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968 into law, just days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr The legislation, also known as the Fair Housing Act, prohibited discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, or later amendments, gender and disability.
The Act marked a major advancement in the American civil rights movement and aimed to address systemic inequality in housing.
