On 17 February 2017, geologists announced the discovery of Zealandia, a largely submerged continent in the South Pacific, in the research journal GSA Today.

Spanning nearly five million square kilometres—about two-thirds the size of Australia—Zealandia remained concealed beneath the ocean, with only its highest peaks, including New Zealand and New Caledonia, visible above water.

Researchers determined that Zealandia meets all the geological criteria of a continent, boasting a distinct composition, well-defined area, and a crust significantly thicker than the surrounding ocean floor.

This revelation reshapes our understanding of Earth’s geography, highlighting how vast geological structures can remain unnoticed beneath the waves.
