The term for the interim government could extend to approximately 2 years, as advised during a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, according to editors of prominent national newspapers present at the discussion.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam disclosed the information following the meeting held at the State Guesthouse Jamuna on Tuesday (3 September).
“We, the editors, have come together. We have expressed our full support for the actions of Dr Yunus and his government. We wish to see a new horizon unfold in Bangladesh. As an editor, I raised concerns about ensuring the safety of journalists and addressing the rampant filing of murder cases,” said Editors' Council President Mahfuz Anam, who is also the editor of The Daily Star.
He further elaborated, “During the discussion, it was mentioned that we want to establish national unity in Bangladesh. We have expressed our expectations for significant reforms from this government. Among these reforms are constitutional amendments, strengthening local government, and making autonomous bodies like the Anti-Corruption Commission, Human Rights Commission, and Election Commission genuinely public-oriented institutions. Specifically, we desire an Election Commission that reflects the true concerns of the nation and its voters in all future elections. We also want an Anti-Corruption Commission that can operate independently.”
Mahfuz Anam also mentioned, “Another point we raised was the autonomy of BSS, BTV, and Radio Bangladesh, which are currently under government control. They should be granted autonomy so that they can fulfil their responsibilities professionally.”
He concluded by saying, “The Chief Adviser asked us about the duration of the interim government. While many have expressed different opinions on this matter, the key issue that emerged is: What is the agenda of this government? The timeline should align with that. Several political parties have stated that the government should stay as long as necessary, while others have suggested a reasonable time frame. However, these are vague notions.”
