BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed his party's stance against the banning of any political parties, asserting that the constitution allows individuals to support any party, provided it aligns with the principles of freedom and sovereignty.

He clarified that the BNP does not support the prohibition of any political organisation, including Jamaat-e-Islami while speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's political office in Gulshan, Dhaka on Wednesday (28 August).

Regarding a query about the withdrawal of the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami, Mirza Fakhrul reiterated the party's position, stating, "We are not in favour of banning any political party. The constitution permits people to support any party, but it must support freedom and sovereignty."

In response to questions about the timing of elections, he indicated that the appropriate timing would be determined through discussions.

He emphasised the need for talks between political parties and the current government to address what the public desires and to ensure that a consensus is reached.

Mirza Fakhrul noted that he had recently met with leading business figures who also advocated for a democratic government, highlighting that the lack of a democratic government is affecting business orders and exports.

He urged for a swift election process to meet the public's demand for a democratic government.

The BNP leader further asserted that the people desire a democratic government and elections, stating, "If the elections are free, fair, and impartial, people will accept them with satisfaction."

He also reflected on the past, recalling the attempts to eliminate political parties during the 1/11 period and stressing the importance of remembering such attempts as they are crucial to safeguarding democracy.
