A garment worker named Mumira Akter, 32, has died after being hit by a garbage truck of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC).
The accident took place around 8am this morning when Mumira, a worker at Bernhardt Textiles, was attempting to cross a road in Kunia Targach area in Gazipur, said Gacha Thana’s Deputy Inspector Shakhawat Hossain.
In protest of her death, local garment workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, set a city corporation garbage truck on fire, and vandalised several other vehicles, resulting in a long tailback on the highway.
The situation was brought under control around 12:30pm, said Gacha Thana Officer-in-Charge Shah Alam, adding that the traffic movement on the highway is now back to normal.
