Interim government's adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Asif Mahmud, who has also been a key coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, has stated that the era of politics driven by brute force, repression, and sycophantic student politics is drawing to a close.
"It is not student politics that we need, but political awareness. I have long fought against cadre-based groups, repression, and sycophantic student politics. It was the political consciousness among students that enabled the fight against Hasina's fascist regime. If students maintain their political awareness, Bangladesh will not lose its way," he said in a Facebook post on Monday (12 August).
Mahmud further added that student leaders should be elected through student union elections.
He emphasised that the time has come to bid farewell to the politics of brute force, repression, and sycophantic student politics.
Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was sworn in as the head of the interim government on 8 August, at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban. Alongside him, 13 advisers also took the oath, including Asif Mahmud.
