World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr Tedros Gebreyesus Adhanom has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to attend the upcoming World Health Assembly, aiming to encourage other countries to adopt Bangladesh’s community clinic model for their primary healthcare services.
The WHO Director-General conveyed the invitation during a meeting with Sheikh Hasina on Friday (16 February) in Munich, held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference 2024, reads a press release.
During the meeting, the WHO chief congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her re-election and praised Bangladesh’s achievements in the health sector, particularly in primary healthcare.
PM Hasina provided updates to the WHO director-general on her government’s initiatives aimed at further expanding secondary and tertiary healthcare services, vaccine production, antimicrobial resistance, and human resources development, particularly in nursing.
She also sought WHO’s support in providing training to healthcare professionals and in medical research.
WHO chief assured of all possible cooperation to further improve Bangladesh’s healthcare system.
He sought Bangladesh’s diplomatic support for the early conclusion of the International Pandemic Treaty.
Prime Minister Hasina assured support for the International Pandemic Treaty from Bangladesh and underscored the importance of such a treaty in preventing or better managing any future pandemics.
