Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has urged world leaders to stop senseless arms-race and divert the resources instead to mobilise the much-needed fund for fighting climate change.
The premier made the call while speaking at the 2024 Munich Security Conference’s Panel Discussion titled, “From Pocket to Planet: Scaling Up Climate Finance" on Friday (16 February), reads a press release.
She also highlighted Bangladesh government’s adaptation plans and programmes as well as mitigation efforts, including increased emphasis on renewable energy generation and greening the economy to offset climate change vulnerability.
Special Presidential Envoy for Climate of USA John Kerry, Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley and Foreign Minister of Maldives Moosa Zameer also joined the Panel Discussin.
On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, The premier also hled a bilateral meeting with the prime minister and foreign minister of Qatar Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.
The Qatari prime minister congratulated PM Hasina on her re-election and expressed Qatar’s desire to further consolidate bilateral relations with Bangladesh.
Both sides discussed bilateral issues of mutual interest, including trade and investment as well as supply of LNG.
The Qatari PM assured to continue its humanitarian assistance to the forcibly displaced Rohingyas, temporarily sheltered in Bangladesh and extend political support towards their early and sustainable repatriation to Myanmar.
Both the leaders underlined the necessity to raise voice and work jointly for the end of the Israeli atrocities in Gaza Strip.
PM Hasina held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen.
At the meeting, she thanked the Danish PM for her warm felicitation message on her re-election as the prime minister for the fifth term.
Both the prime ministers expressed satisfaction at the increasing interest from the leading Danish companies for investment in port infrastructure and renewable energy sectors in Bangladesh.
The Danish prime minister assured to continue Danish government’s humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas in Bangladesh and Denmark’s political support towards resolving the protracted crisis.
The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also held meetings with World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Gebreyesus Adhanom; President of Global Affairs at Meta Sir Nick Clegg and President of Women Political Leaders (WPL), Silvana Koch-Mehrin.
